Style: Chapters 1-4

Hey everyone - it was great to meet all of you to-day. Post your comments, questions, etc. for discussion on Friday in the comments section of this post. From now on, will whoever makes the first comment do what I'm doing now, and create a new post, and everyone else leave their postings in the comment section of it? Thanks!

I thought the first few pages of the book were rather interesting personally because I know I am always guilty of making sentences much more complicated and longer than they need to be. I feel like during high school I was almost rewarded for using more words than necessary, and it is probably going to be difficult for me to get out of that habit. I really enjoyed reading all of the quotes from famous authors about the use of "legalese" and overly complex wording, particularly the comment by Douglas Chadwick about scientific phrasing.
I was hoping that we could go over the usages of "who" and "whom" at some point because I have never really understood the differences between those words.
Finally, I just have to add that I am confident that I will not mind reading a book when it uses the word "hobgoblins" in all seriousness, particularly as the bold-print title of a section.
