Candide 11-20

I think Voltaire's writing, much like Johnson's, is a happy medium between blutness (e.g. Boswell) and wordiness (e.g. Rowlandson and Byrd). This style would be perfect for our essays because, while there is much detail present, it is not excessively descriptive.

Half of the events that occur in this story are so bizarre. The monkey incident that has already mentioned on the blog, but the part about the eunuch trying in vain to rape the old woman is insane. I feel like this is one long Farrelly brothers movie or something. I can see someone trying to make a film out of this book and just having a huge string of events with little continuity. However, I would love it. I feel bad laughing about some of the events, but they are presented in such a dry way that I can't help thinking how ridiculous everything is.
I also thought it was really depressing when the old woman predicted that everyone has been upset to be alive. Do you think that is true? That everyone who has lived has been upset with life, if not regretted being alive?
