The Jew in the Thorn Bush

I really enjoyed this reading, and not only because it was short! Though I did not exactly see how one could call it a fairytale ( which I usually think along the lines of Cinderella), I do like reading fiction, as I did Candide. How quick they are to make convictions is comical, death is just around the corner. Again, the stereotypes of Jewish people are highlighted, as the jew is portrayed as a money swindling thief. I don't really know how much analysis I have of this other that the assumptions that are made in the end. I think you just have to take it for what its worth.

This reading was kind of bizarre. Was there supposed to be some sort of moral? At first I thought the servant who made the wishes was going to be the "bad guy" who was punished in the end, but then it turned out that the Jew was characterized as the bad one and sentenced to death. I had never thought of any of the Brothers Grimm's tales as political before, so it was interesting to see a less popular one and realize how political they actually were. I almost wish this reading were a little bit longer though, because I didn't really get into it before it was over. It left me wanting to know more about the characters.
